It’s been almost two weeks since the horrible no-call that resulted in the Saints not going to the Super Bowl, and the pain in New Orleans is still real. But in true New Orleans fashion our coping techniques involve the many ways we can poke fun at Goodell and the referees during Mardi Gras (I’m sure we’re going to see A LOT of creative ideas as the parades begin to roll). And they also involve alcohol. In our case, we’re talking a crafted cocktail. Something to symbolize the collective feelings of New Orleans.
Bourbon House’s bar team, along with Dickie Brennan & Co. Beverage Director, Barry Himel created a bitter heavy, spicy rye whiskey cocktail titled “The Three Blind Refs” to honor our current state of affairs. Garden & Gun calls it “the perfect cocktail for bereft Saints fans.”
If you’re looking for a cocktail to make this Sunday while you’re doing anything BUT watching the big game – this would be it. It’s got a triple dose of bitters, packs a strong punch and the skewered Luxardo cherry is symbolic of our broken hearts.
Three Blind Refs
2 oz. Bulleit Rye Whiskey
½ oz. Zucca Rabarbaro liqueur
2–3 dashes each of Chicory-Pecan, Angostura, and Orange bitters
For the garnish: One Luxardo cherry and lemon twist skewered on pick (Himel uses one capped with a fleur de lis)
Add ingredients to a mixing glass with ice and stir. Strain into a rocks glass with one large ice cube. Garnish with a lemon twist and cherry on a pick.
